19th Mediterranean Cooking Event – Greece

As all travels come to an end also this travel comes to an end. Our last station is Greece, the birthplace of this blog. The Greek Cuisine is in my opinion highly underestimated. This is due to mostly lousy cooking abilities in crowded touristy areas of the country. Original Greek Cuisine is mainly cooked at home and is not too known to visitors. Dishes like Tzatziki, Souvlaki and Moussaka are famous but the vast cheese culture of Greece is not very famous. Of the hundreds of local cheeses only Feta has made it across the borders. Also mostly unknown is the tradition of drinking Tsipouro or Raki. Clearly the 500 years of Ottoman occupation have left its traces in the the Greek Cuisine, but you can also discover Italian as well as north African and Persian influences.

Basis of the Greek Cuisine is a solid Mezze Culture. Also Magirefta – cooked dishes – which are slow baked or cooked dishes are common. The Ladera (ladi = oil) are dishes that are preserved using olive oil. The Politiki Cusina takes a special role in Greek cooking. It is the Cuisine that comes from the “Poli” meaning Konstantinopel.

The Greeks also love to eat small fish, big fish are rather a special than a common meal.

18th Mediterranean Cooking Event – Malta

Malta is the smalles member state of the Euopean Union with a surface of 320 square kilometer and approximately 400.000 inhabitants. Though small in size the diversity when it comes to Mediterranean fruits, vegetables and herbs is great. Meat is rare on the islands, but rabbit is served a lot. The main source of protein is the local fish. The Mahi-Mahi is the “national fish” but also Ġbejna, a small cheese from goat milk is eaten a lot.

Start date is the 10th of March 2011.
End date is the 10th of April 2011.

I was trying hard, but could not find a cook book on the cuisine of Malta. Not even a related book with good ratings could be found. So this time the joy of participating must be motivation enough.

Roundup and voting – 16th Mediterranean Cooking Event – Libya

This time I am a bit late with the roundup post of the 16th Mediterranean Cooking Event. There are lots of dishes participating this time though and I am looking forward to you all voting a lot! We have 11 great dishes you can choose your favorite from.

You can encourage your readers to for you with linking to the voting!

	The first participant to join the cooking contest on Libya is Platainleafs. The great fish dish cooked by Padma Rekha, the blog´s author is Libyan Pouched Fish - tuna steaks in a great seasoning.
	The Italian language blog Labna - amore in cucina is the second one to hand in a recipe. Bamia is a great looking okra dish with chicken and tomato.
	As many times before Sweet Artichoke is also joining us very loyal. This time with a sweet dish. Maqrood are semolina and date cookies that go very well with coffee or tea.
	The libyan food blog has never participated before this event. This time though it is participating with quite a few original dishes. The first one is called Kofta bil Batinja, a great aubergine wrap with tomato sauce.
	Basbousa with dates is the second dish to come from the libyan food blog.
	Fried fish stuffed with potatoes is a typical Libyan dish. It is called Mbatan Kawali and look fabulous. Check it out!
	Couscous bil Hoot is another great libyan fish dish. It is couscous dish with fish served with a vegetable sauce.
	Ftat Misrati is a flat bread made on the stove top. It can be used for wrapping food. The libyan version of the sandwich ;)
	Who ever thought one could not roast a salad was wrong. here you go! The dish is called Salata Mashwiya
	Tajin Sfinari bil Zaytun is a great looking lamb dish. Ginger, cumin and caraway seeds season this dish.
	Last but not least i want to introduce Makaruna Imbaukha bil Khalta to you. It is a bit of an unusual dish featuring chicken as well as lamb liver. Another very typical dish for the region.

17th Mediterranean Cooking Event – Montenegro

The cuisine of Montenegro is influenced by it geographic position and by it history. The proximity to Italy with has brought Polenta for example but also a great knowledge of wine making to the country. Historically the traces of the Ottoman Empire can be found in dishes like Musaka, Pilav, Pita, Kebab but also Baklava. Even the Hungarian Gulash is part of the traditional food of Montenegro.

Wine and Schnaps is produced locally. The style of cuisine is very diverse from the coast line to the mountains.

16th Mediterranean Cooking Event – Libya

We remain in in the north of Africa. Our next stop is Libya which is dominated by the Sahara. The cuisine contains Milk, corn, rice and dates but also olives and olive oil. Of course no pork is eaten in Libya but certainly lamb, veal and fish are on the menu.

The food is traditionally served on big plates. No drinks are being served during dinner. After the dinner water or milk is being passed around. The meal is being ended with coffee.

Of course the Libyan cuisine is influenced by the Berber, that is why it is often called a “tent cuisine” but also the Italian cuisine has a strong impact on the libyan cooking.

At this point I want to remind you of the ongoing event with the topic Israel. check it out.

	A Hot Sauce with Walnuts and Mint is the first entry by Erbe in cucina. The spicy dish is called Muhammara and goes well as a bread spread or dip.I love that the dish has Molasses!
	Kibbeh is the dish that the tastespace has entered to the contest. These are Bulgur Patties. A vegetarian dish that is nicely seasoned.
	The sweet artichoke has been baking something sweet. Ma’amoul are Middle Eastern walnut cookies. It is a kind of short bread that is prepared all over the region.

15th Mediterranean Cooking Event – Israel

We kind of go next door. Leaving Syria, going to Israel our next country to visit with the event.
It is a bit difficult to speak of “Israeli Cuisine” as jewish seddlers form all over the world brought food with them. This certainly makes it very interesting. The national dish is the Falaffel, an Arab dish, but also the “Bagel” comes from Yiddish language.
